Book review guidelines
1) You need to choose a recently published research book on any subject related to the course for book review which will be you mid-term paper. You can choose any book, but you need to run your choice through me to get my approval :
2) The book should preferably be in English and published recently (2020s). If the book of your choice is NOT in English, the book review should still be in English.
3) The review should be on a research book (individual or collective monograph, edited volume, research report), NOT an article, short report, journalistic account, or fiction.
4) Here are some examples of books for review (these are just sample cases with no online PDF texts available for free, so you don’t have to choose them): a) Samuel Ramani, Russia in Africa (Hurst, 2023): b) Marika Sosnowski, Redefining Ceasefires: Wartime Order and Statebuilding in Syria (Cambridge University Press, 2022): c) Martin Plaut and Sarah Vaughan, Understanding Ethiopia’s Tigray War (Hurst, 2022): d) Ahmad Shuja Jamal and William Maley, The Decline and Fall of Republican Afghanistan (Hurst, 2022):
5) The book review should consist of: a) Review title (different from the title of the book itself, i. e. the title of your own review); b) Full reference record of the book on which you are writing a review (author’s name, book title, publisher, year of publication, number of pages etc.); c) The main text should combine a brief overview of what you consider to be the book’s main argument, themes, and new research input (results) coupled with your own critical assessment and discussion of the book’s main ideas and argument(s). If the review is limited to a brief “description” of the book contents only, it does not qualify for a “book review”. d) Concluding recommendations to the readers.
6) Please keep the book review concise (there is no word limit, but, for the purpose of this assignment, a review normally does not exceed 5-6 pages, 1.5-spaced).
